When the freezer is cold but the fresh-food side is warm, the cold air is usually not getting where it needs to go. That points to an airflow or defrost problem more often than a dead cooling system.

- Look at the vents inside the refrigerator and freezer. Food pushed against a vent stops cold air from flowing, so move items back and leave space.
- Check the temperature setting. Dials and touch panels get bumped, and a setting that is too warm looks like a fault.
- Make sure the doors close fully and the gaskets seal. A door held open by a tray or a bin lets warm air in.
- Listen with the door open and the door switch pressed in. You should hear a fan running in the freezer. No fan noise suggests a failed evaporator fan motor.
- Look at the back wall of the freezer. A thick layer of frost over the panel often means the defrost system is not clearing it.
What usually causes it
Because the freezer and refrigerator share one cooling coil, a problem in how cold air is shared tends to show up as a warm fridge and a cold freezer.
- A frozen evaporator coil. Frost covers the coil and blocks airflow, usually because the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control board failed.
- A failed evaporator fan motor. The fan moves cold air from the freezer into the fresh-food side.
- A stuck air damper. This flap controls how much cold air enters the refrigerator, and it can stick or fail.
- A dirty condenser coil. Dust and pet hair make the whole system work harder and cool less.
The defrost test, and what it tells you
- Move food into a cooler with ice, then unplug the refrigerator for about 24 hours with the doors open so any frost can melt. Put towels down for the water.
- Plug it back in and watch the temperature over the next few days.
- If cooling returns and then fails again after days or weeks, the defrost system is the likely cause. This is a repair, not a cleaning job.
- If cooling does not return at all, call for a diagnosis.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my freezer cold but my refrigerator warm?
Cold air is made in the freezer and shared with the fresh-food side by a fan and a damper. If the fan fails, a vent is blocked or frost clogs the coil, the freezer can stay cold while the refrigerator warms up.
Can I fix a refrigerator that is not cooling myself?
You can safely clear the vents, check the settings, clean the condenser coils and do a defrost. Anything involving the fan, defrost heater, control board or sealed system should be done by a technician.
How long can food stay in a warm refrigerator?
Perishable food above 40 degrees Fahrenheit for more than two hours should be thrown out. A full freezer that stayed closed keeps food safe longer than a refrigerator does.
Is it worth repairing a refrigerator that will not cool?
It depends on the age, the part and the cost. Our repair or replace guide explains how to decide before you spend money.
