Washer Will Not Spin: Causes and Safe Checks

Washer troubleshooting

A washer that agitates but will not spin leaves you with a drum of soaking clothes. The cause is often simple, such as an unbalanced load or a lid that is not registering as closed.

Quick answer: Most no-spin problems come from an unbalanced or overloaded drum, a lid switch or door latch that is not detecting that the door is closed, or water that has not drained. Redistribute the load, check the lid or door, and run a drain cycle. If it still will not spin, a belt, motor coupler or control may have failed.
Safety: Unplug the washer before reaching behind it or opening any panel. Standing water in the drum can be heavy and hot, so drain it before moving anything.

Quick checks you can do safely

  1. Pause the cycle, open the door and redistribute the clothes. A heavy lump on one side stops many washers from spinning.
  2. Remove some items if the drum is packed. An overloaded washer may refuse to spin or may stop partway through.
  3. Close the lid or door firmly and listen for the click. Press the lid down at the latch to see if the cycle continues.
  4. Run a drain and spin cycle on its own. Many washers will not spin until the water has been pumped out.
  5. Check the drain hose behind the washer for kinks, and clean the drain pump filter if your model has one. Our washer not draining guide shows how.
  6. Unplug the washer for a few minutes and plug it back in. This resets many control faults.

What usually causes it

  1. A worn or faulty lid switch on a top-load washer, or a door latch on a front-load washer.
  2. A drain problem that keeps the washer from reaching the spin stage.
  3. A broken drive belt or worn motor coupler, especially on older top-load washers.
  4. A failed motor or motor control board.
  5. A washer that is not level and keeps shutting down on an out-of-balance warning.

Signs it is time to call

  1. The washer fills and agitates but makes a humming or grinding noise when it should spin.
  2. There is a burning smell, or the motor is very hot.
  3. The checks above did not help, or the same fault comes back within days.
  4. You see water leaking from the bottom of the washer.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my washer fill and drain but not spin?

The most common reasons are an unbalanced load, a lid switch or door latch that is not detecting a closed door, or a failed drive belt or motor coupler. Start with the load and the door.

Can a washer not spin because of a drain problem?

Yes. Most washers will not start the spin cycle until the water has drained. A clogged drain pump or kinked hose can stop it at that stage.

Is it worth fixing a washer that will not spin?

Often yes for a simple part such as a lid switch or belt, but not always for an older machine with several worn parts. Our repair or replace guide can help you decide.

How do I get the clothes out if the washer will not spin?

Unplug the washer, drain the water through the drain hose into a bucket, then wring out the clothes by hand or take them out to dry.
