Dryer Takes Too Long to Dry Clothes: Causes and Fixes

Dryer troubleshooting

If your clothes need two cycles to dry, the dryer is usually not moving enough air. A blocked lint screen or vent is the cause far more often than a failed part, and it is also a fire risk worth fixing.

Quick answer: Poor airflow is the usual cause: a clogged lint screen, a crushed or lint-packed vent hose, or a blocked outside vent. Clean the lint screen, check the vent hose and the outside flap, and avoid overloading. If airflow is clear and the dryer still runs warm but slow, a heating element, thermostat or gas valve may need repair.
Safety: A dryer vent packed with lint is a fire hazard. Unplug the dryer, and on a gas dryer shut off the gas, before pulling it away from the wall. If you smell gas, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911.

Check airflow first

  1. Clean the lint screen after every load. Pull it out and look at it, because a thin film from dryer sheets can block airflow even when it looks clean.
  2. Wash the lint screen with warm water and a soft brush, let it dry, then test it by pouring water through it. If water pools on the mesh, the film is blocking air.
  3. Pull the dryer forward and check that the vent hose is not crushed, kinked or squeezed behind the machine.
  4. Run the dryer and go outside to the vent. You should feel strong, warm air and see the flap open fully. Weak air or a stuck flap means a blockage.
  5. Disconnect the vent hose and clear out lint by hand or with a vent brush made for dryer ducts.

Other common causes

  1. An overloaded drum. Clothes need room to tumble, or the air cannot reach them.
  2. A very long or bendy vent run. The longer the vent and the more turns it has, the harder it is for the dryer to push air out.
  3. A failed heating element or thermal fuse on an electric dryer. The drum turns but the air stays cool or lukewarm.
  4. On an electric dryer, one half of the double breaker tripped. The drum runs but there is little heat.
  5. A faulty gas igniter or valve on a gas dryer.
  6. A worn drum seal or moisture sensor fault, which can end cycles early with damp clothes.

When to call

  1. The vent is clear and the lint screen is clean but drying is still slow.
  2. The dryer shuts off on its own, or the outside of the dryer gets very hot.
  3. You smell burning or see scorch marks on the lint screen or hose.
  4. The dryer will not heat at all. Our dryer not heating guide covers that case.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my dryer take two cycles to dry clothes?

The most common reason is restricted airflow from a clogged lint screen, vent hose or outside vent. Less often a heating element, thermostat or gas valve is weak.

How often should a dryer vent be cleaned?

Clean the lint screen every load. The vent duct should be checked at least once a year, and more often if you have a long vent run, pets, or a large family doing many loads.

Can a clogged dryer vent cause a fire?

Yes. Lint is flammable, and a blocked vent traps heat. Cleaning the vent and keeping airflow clear lowers the risk.

Is it worth repairing a slow dryer?

If the cause is airflow, cleaning solves it at no parts cost. If a heating part has failed, repair is often reasonable for a newer dryer. Our repair or replace guide explains how to decide.
