Water on the floor or in the bottom of the fridge is usually a blocked drain, a loose water line or a poorly seated filter. Most of these are simple to check before you call anyone.

- Water pooling inside under the crisper drawers or at the back wall is usually a clogged defrost drain.
- Water on the floor in front of the refrigerator often comes from the water supply line, the filter or the ice maker.
- Water on the floor under the refrigerator that comes and goes can be an overflowing drain pan.
- Drips around the door are usually condensation from a door that is not sealing.
Checks you can do safely
- Clear the defrost drain. Remove the back panel in the freezer if your model allows, and flush the drain with warm water using a turkey baster.
- Check the water filter. Take it out and put it back in firmly. A loose filter or housing leaks.
- Look at the water supply line at the back. If it is kinked, loose or has water at the fitting, turn off the supply valve and call for help.
- Check the door gasket for gaps and clean it with warm soapy water.
- Make sure the refrigerator is level, tilted very slightly back so the doors close on their own.
When to call
- The water supply line or valve is leaking.
- You cleared the drain and water keeps coming back.
- The leak is near the electrical parts or the refrigerator has stopped cooling.
- You cannot tell where the water comes from.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my refrigerator leaking water on the floor?
The common reasons are a clogged defrost drain, a loose water supply line, a filter that is not seated, or an overflowing drain pan. Where the water appears points to the cause.
Is it safe to use a refrigerator that is leaking?
Unplug it if water is near the outlet or electrical parts. For a small drain leak you can usually keep using it while you fix the cause, but never ignore water around electricity.
Can I fix a clogged defrost drain myself?
Often yes. Flush it with warm water using a turkey baster. If it clogs again, there may be a deeper blockage or a defrost problem.
Does a leaking refrigerator mean it needs replacing?
Not usually. Most leaks come from a drain, a line or a filter. Our repair or replace guide explains when replacement makes sense.
