Washer Leaking Water: Causes and Safe Checks

Washer troubleshooting

A leaking washer is usually leaking from a hose, a seal or a drawer, not from the drum itself. Work out when and where the water appears, and the cause is often clear.

Quick answer: Common leak sources are the water inlet hoses, the drain hose connection, the door seal on a front-load washer, an overfull detergent drawer, or a leaking pump. Turn off the water supply, check the hoses first, and call if the leak is inside the machine.
Safety: Turn off the water supply valves and unplug the washer before pulling it out or reaching behind it. Water and electricity are a dangerous mix.

Work out where it leaks

  1. Leak at the back, steady while filling: the inlet hoses or their fittings.
  2. Leak while draining: the drain hose connection or the pump.
  3. Leak at the front door of a front-load washer: the door seal or the boot.
  4. Leak under the detergent drawer: too much detergent or a blocked drawer.
  5. Leak that appears only with large loads: overloading or too much suds.

Checks you can do safely

  1. Turn off the water and look at the hoses behind the washer. Tighten loose fittings by hand and replace cracked or bulging hoses.
  2. Check the drain hose is secured in the standpipe and not kinked.
  3. Wipe the door seal, look for tears or trapped objects, and clean the rubber.
  4. Use the right amount of detergent for a high-efficiency washer. Too much makes suds that spill.
  5. Make sure the washer is level so water does not run out of the drawer or the door.

When to call

  1. The leak comes from inside the cabinet, underneath or from the tub seal.
  2. The hoses and seals look fine but water still collects.
  3. You smell something burning or the washer will not drain.
  4. The leak keeps returning after a hose replacement.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my washing machine leaking from the bottom?

The bottom leak usually comes from a drain hose, a pump seal or the tub. Turn off the water and watch when the water appears to narrow it down.

Why is my front-load washer leaking from the door?

Usually the door seal has tears, trapped debris or mold buildup. Cleaning the seal and checking for damage solves many cases.

Can too much detergent make a washer leak?

Yes. Too much detergent creates excess suds that spill from the drawer or door.

Is it worth repairing a leaking washer?

Hose and seal repairs are usually worth it. A leaking tub on an older washer may not be. Our repair or replace guide explains how to decide.
