Dishwasher troubleshooting

Dishwasher leaks usually come from the door seal, a loose hose or too much soap, and all three are easy to check. Find the source before the water damages your floor or cabinets.

Quick answer: The usual causes are a worn door gasket, a loose or cracked hose, too much detergent or the wrong detergent making suds, an unlevel dishwasher, or a failed inlet valve or pump seal. Check the door seal and detergent first.
Safety: Switch off the dishwasher breaker and the water supply before looking underneath. Never use hand dish soap in a dishwasher, since it makes heavy suds.

Quick checks you can do safely

  1. Look at the door gasket along the edges. Clean it and check for cracks, tears or food stuck in the seal.
  2. Use dishwasher detergent only. Hand soap creates suds that push out of the door.
  3. Make sure the dishwasher is level and the door closes fully, with nothing blocking it.
  4. Do not overload the racks so the spray arm hits the door or dishes.
  5. Run a short cycle and watch where the water first appears.

Causes that need a closer look

  1. A loose or cracked hose or a leaking fitting behind the kick plate.
  2. A water inlet valve that does not close fully and overfills the tub.
  3. A leaking pump seal, which usually drips from the bottom.
  4. A cracked spray arm or a damaged float.
  5. A drain problem that lets water back up. Our dishwasher not draining guide covers that.

When to call

  1. Water appears underneath and the door seal looks fine.
  2. The dishwasher overfills or the leak appears at the start of a cycle.
  3. You see rust, mold or a damp smell under the sink or in the cabinet.
  4. The leak keeps coming back after a gasket or detergent change.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my dishwasher leaking from the door?

The door gasket is the most common cause. A dirty, torn or loose gasket, too much soap or an unlevel dishwasher can all push water out of the door.

Why is there water under my dishwasher?

It often comes from a hose, the inlet valve or the pump seal. Turn off the power and water and look at the connections behind the kick plate.

Can the wrong soap cause a dishwasher to leak?

Yes. Hand dish soap makes heavy suds that overflow from the door and vent.

Is it worth repairing a leaking dishwasher?

A gasket, hose or valve repair is usually worth it for a newer machine. See our repair or replace guide.
